Digital Citizenship #1 - Into

Welcome to your new unit on Digital Citizenship. During this unit we will be exploring the different areas of being a digital citizen.

We will be focusing on such areas as:
  • Digital Values
  • Online vs. Offline
  • Cyberbullying
  • Being cybersmart
  • Internet Safety

 Introduction:  Digital Values

Lesson Aim
You will consider how to transfer your offline values into the online world
Achievement Objectives
AO #1: to consider behaviour on the internet
AO#2: to begin to formulate ideas of what is needed to be a safe, secure and moral digital citizen

Firstly I want to ask you...

"Who is a good citizen?" . Talk to the person next to you and discuss an answer to share with the rest of the class.
 E.g. a good citizen is:
Honest, looks for ways to improve their community, helps others etc

"So who is a good digital citizen then?". Discuss in small groups/pairs.

Consider the following ...and discuss with your partner
* Using mobile phones in classrooms
* Visiting unknown websites included in emails from people you don’t know.
  * Forwarding on nasty texts about other pupils.
  * Forwarding on chain emails
  * Letting your mates know about a site that helps with subject coursework.
* Uploading photos of your mates on to a social network.
* Always accepting anyone who asks to be your buddy on instant messenger or a social network e.g. Myspace/Facebook.
* Ignoring messages from your anti virus saying that updates are available.
* Downloading an example of an "Excellence" essay from the a school resource website
* Having online discussions, with someone you don’t know, about private things.

COPY the points above and past them into a comment below this post
Then I want you to think seriously about how you feel about all of those comments and post your answers in the comment box. You can post anonymously if you want to - you don't have to attach your name to this post.

Next task....

* Watch the ONLINE vs. OFFLINE powerpoint and complete the activity

  10. * Using mobile phones in classrooms
I hople I can use mobile phones in classrooms, because you can use calculator in the mobile phones, also you can send something to other people.

    * Visiting unknown websites included in emails from people you don’t know.
I don't think that visit the websites included in emails fom people that you don't know is good. Because may be in the websites will have some thing that make your computer can't work, or somrthing that can lat other people go in to your computer and still/look your thing.

  11. * Using mobile phones in classrooms
I have an issue with it. They should be turned off and left in bags and only checked during interval or lunch or in emergency situations. They don't need to be out in class, they are just a distraction. There is a phone in the school office for students to use if there is a reason for calling home etc.
    * Visiting unknown websites included in emails from people you don’t know - Wouldn't do it, unless I totally trusted them. If it looked like a legitimate site - then OK, perhaps, but generally I wouldn't do this.
    * Forwarding on nasty texts about other pupils.
Not nice! Not a good way to become a good digital citizen :( Should never do it - it is a form of digital bullying.
    * Forwarding on chain emails - I don't do it. It is a waste of time.
    * Letting your mates know about a site that helps with subject coursework - If if is a legitimate site then perhaps, but if it is just going to lead to plagiarism - then no.
    * Uploading photos of your mates on to a social network - I do do it from time to time - but it is good to ask their permission before tagging them in the photo - it is good manners! You need to think that they may not want that photo on the web - and certainly may not want to have it tagged.
    * Always accepting anyone who asks to be your buddy on instant messenger or a social network e.g. Myspace/Facebook - Never do it. I always have to know the person before accepting a buddy on a social networking site. Who knows "who" you could be accepting to be your "friend". Be cyber safe!
    * Ignoring messages from your anti virus saying that updates are available - don't do it - always update your anti virus or you could get into trouble!
    * Downloading an example of an "Excellence" essay from the a school resource website - OK for revision, but has to be a legitimate site and not used for "copying" straight text from!
    * Having online discussions, with someone you don’t know, about private things - NEVER! As they say in the "X-Files"..."Trust no one". It could be someone very dodgy!
